Synopsis: Yuma County presents itself as one thing at first, but it’s actually something else. It seems at first like the kind of movie where everyone has secrets that are barely hidden out of sight because of the cautious, weighted conversation. They alone don’t in reality. As it happens, the guy selling knives on the road is, well, a traveling knife salesman. And that’s exactly what he’s doing when he stutters that he’s on his way to his daughter’s birthday celebration in Bakersfield, as though that’s an incoherent way of putting it. It plays with the expectations of the audience in the manner it’s written, acted, and shot. All this sharp banter would be oozing with hidden motivations and subtext in a normal neo-noir film.
