Synopsis: Barrino’s Celie witnesses her father sexually abusing her in Georgia at the start of the 20th century. He abducts the two offspring and ruthlessly marries her off to the ostensibly endearing “Mister” Johnson. He is brilliantly but damagedly roguishly portrayed by Colman Domingo. In addition, Celie is constantly made fun of by her husband for his obsessive fascination with singer Shug Avery, who he treats like an obnoxious mistress. Celie is shocked when Mister angrily sends her sister Nettie away when she moves in with them, but she defies his abhorrent advances. Following what seems to be a drunken collapse, Avery moves in with them as a live-in patient and at last develops a close friendship and perhaps more with Celie.
