Synopsis: After his wife passes away, Ben, a cantor in Between the Temples, experiences a crisis of faith. When he runs into Carla, his old elementary school music teacher, he becomes a friend and grudgingly agrees to help her get ready for her Bat Mitzvah. Screenwriter/director Nathan Silver and co-writer C. Mason Wells’ script is awkward, boring, and inconsistent in tone. Silver and Wells are aware that tragedy is frequently the source of comedy. Between the Temples could have employed that idea more selectively or carried it to hilarious extremes. Ben’s midlife crisis was explored, or it could have achieved both.
