Synopsis: The image of the man and woman staring straight into the camera comes next. We are reassured by a voiceover that we are unaware of this woman’s experience. We soon learn that the woman carrying a baby is Mary and the man on the horse is Joseph. Because of their “arty aesthetics”, these introductory sequences make you laugh unconsciously and prevent you from taking anything seriously. Your first reaction as Mary’s father, Joachim, wanders the desert begging for a child is, “Did he try having intercourse with his wife?” The film unintentionally turns into a comedy.
